Barry Jonathan Brown
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have worked since I was 11 doing some kind of little job like paper routes, cook, laborer, etc. I have always enjoyed working with my hands. After graduating from high school, I was confused about what I wanted to do as far as going to college or on a mission. I always knew I would serve a mission, but I didn’t go on my mission at the age of 19. I tried going to college at Rick’s College in Idaho, but I have dyslexia and memorizing has always been very hard for me. I ended up coming home and going to Hawaii and working on a pineapple plantation for 6 months. When I came home from Hawaii, I went to the young adult ward and met my wife, Wendy. On our first date, we talked until 2 a.m. We dated for 9 months. She fasted with our bishop and some friends for me to be able to make the decision to go on a mission. That Sunday, I went in and talked to the bishop about going on a mission not knowing that Wendy had been fasting and praying for me. I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Boise, Idaho. I was 23 when I left on my mission. On my mission I learned some techniques that helped me to be able to memorize. I was able to memorize all the discussions and scriptures for my mission.
After I came home, I began dating Wendy again. We dated for another 9 months, and we were married on October 21, 1983 in the St. George, Utah Temple. After my mission and took more college classes. I was working at a lumber store when Wendy and I got married. Four months after we were married, my dad, who was now the bishop of the young adult ward, called and told me about a construction job where I would be trained to be a carpenter. I took the job and have worked as a finish carpenter for 27 years. We mostly do high-end home and that has kept me steadily employed.
Lieren is our oldest child. She graduated from USU with a bachelor’s degree in History. She met her husband, Kent Hansen, at USU, and they were married on August 4, 2007, and they now have 2 sons, Samuel (age 2) and Trevor (6 months). Then we have Caitlin who is now finishing her last year at USU in the Nutrition and Diet Therapy program. After she completes an internship next summer, she will be a Dietician/Nutritionist. She was married on June 5, 2010 to Kyle Miller. Our third child is McKenna who is 16 and loves scuba diving and playing the piano. Our youngest daughter is Shannon who is 12 and has just entered Young Women’s and totally enjoys it. She loves to sing and is now learning to play the piano.
I have loved being a father and spending time with my family. My favorite hobby is flying airplanes. I love airplanes. The one thing I did when I got home from my mission was get my pilot’s license. It is now too expensive to fly though, so I build remote controlled airplanes from scratch and fly them at the dry lake which is close to my home in Las Vegas.
