David Floyd Brown
David was born the seventh child, fifth and last son, of Dewaine and Judy Brown and spent all his childhood growing up at 4529 Mayflower Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was always special to follow so closely behind six older siblings who truly paved a recognizable path through the schools, the church, and life. He graduated from Western High School in 1981 and served a mission in the Tokyo North Japan mission from 22 Apr 1982 to 27 Oct 1983 — one of those “18 monthers” (though President Kimball’s call was for two years!). He returned to BYU and taught Japanese for two years, taking in an Asian Seminar study abroad in 1985 where he spent time in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, and lastly Taiwan, where he stayed the last two months of the summer on his own. He graduated with a BA in Japanese and Asian Studies from BYU in December of 1987. His best job ever came between graduation and the commencement of law school (also at BYU) in 1988 when he labored on the Las Vegas Temple roof from January through August of that year.
Slower than his siblings, he married at the age of 32 Darci Kristin Hemsley of Tustin, California. They met in 1992 just after both finished graduate programs at BYU: Darci with a Masters of Educational Psychology and David with a Masters of Public Administration and a Juris Doctorate. On August 5, 1995, they were married and sealed in the Manti, Utah Temple. Darci worked as a high school counselor at two Utah high schools and was an assistant professor at Utah Valley State College when they married. After eighteen months together in Utah, they moved to San Diego, CA, where David started practicing law at a local firm and when Darci was seven months pregnant with their first child, Elizabeth. Four months later, they left San Diego for Las Vegas, NV when the law firm imploded and a new opportunity opened up for David. They believe the Lord directed them to San Diego for the challenging delivery of Elizabeth by a great obstetrician. Shortly thereafter, they settled into their first home in Henderson, NV, in January of 1998.
Blonde Bridgette Sariah was added in 2000 and shortly thereafter, after much sacrifice by all family members, David was elected to legislative office as Assemblyman to District 22. He served two terms, enjoying it immensely, except for the separation from family. In the end, David and Darci wanted to bring another child to this world and into their family. Despite a safe legislative seat, they elected to give up the politics for the better blessings of a child, who didn’t come until four years later when Joseph surprised the family and joined the brood in 2006.
In 2000, when Darci’s parents left to serve a mission in Paraguay, she took over her father’s business: consulting to financial advisors. It started out as mostly processing online orders of her father’s seminar materials, but evolved into augmenting the materials and full coaching of advisors via telephone. Through 2011, she has coached well over 100 advisors, some from far away places of the world, and has been a great blessing to them personally and professionally. It has also given her an opportunity to share the gospel with many.
One of Darci’s great loves is dance which she innately took to at a very young age. At BYU, she flourished and found her true niche on the Ballroom Dance Company. She traveled the world touring with the world renowned Company, was their top scholarship female dancer, and won the team world championship in Blackpool, England. Despite the opportunity to compete professionally, she heard and hearkened to the Lord’s voice in calling her to serve a mission for the church. The Dominican Republic was far from Southern California, in distance and physical comforts, which she gave up in dramatic fashion to serve those humble people—a true highlight of her life.
David formed a successful law partnership with three others attorneys in 2003. He elected to leave the firm in 2011 and moved his office into the home which allows him to contribute more to daily family life. He enjoys shuttling children to and from school and watching kids practice soccer, dance, and cello.
